How do I generate a flow?

Want to know how visitors get from one place on your site to another? Generating a flow, is the way to do it, and it's super easy.

First things first, what does "generating a flow" mean? Generating a flow is the act of picking two points on your site to see how visitors interact between them. Think about it like getting directions on Google Maps or Waze—you choose a starting point and a destination, then let the application tell you the most important information you need to know in-between the two points.

There are three types of flows you can generate in Blue Green Analytics:

  1. A to B (Answering the question: What are visitors doing between page A and page B?)
  2. A to 'explore' (Answering the question: Where do visitors go after they are on page A?)
  3. 'Explore' to B (Answering the question: How are visitors getting to page B?)

To access the flow generator, click on "Generate a flow" from the dashboard or in the navigation bar on the left side of the app. You can also access it from any page's preview or detail view—just click on "Start a new flow."

Once you're on the "generate a flow" screen, it's time to select a starting point.

To set a single page on your site as the starting point, click "Add a page +" and search for a page's title or URL, then select the page you're looking for from the results. Alternatively, you can select one of the ten pages Blue Green Analytics has pre-populated (by default, it shows ten of your most trafficked pages).

Then, to select an endpoint, you'll follow the same procedure. Search for the page by clicking "Add a page +" and type in the page's title or URL, then select the page you're looking for from the results. Or, select one of the pages Blue Green Analytics has pre-populated.

Now that you have both A and B selected, all you have to do is click "Generate this flow."

Instead of showing paths between two specific pages, Blue Green Analytics can also give you all the different paths visitors have taken from a single starting point. This will allow you to explore what your visitors are actually doing after they come to your homepage or land on a landing page.

Then, instead of selecting a second page, simply click "Any Page," and let Blue Green Analytics figure out the rest.

Click "Generate this flow" and you're on your way to understanding where visitors navigate after that starting point.
